Goldilocks and the Three Bears

— The warm, cozy feeling of home and finding what's 'just right'

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Once upon a time, deep in a green and shadowy forest, there stood a little cottage. Smoke curled softly from its chimney, and inside lived a family of three bears: Papa Bear, who was big, Mama Bear, who was middle-sized, and Baby Bear, who was small.

A Warm Morning in the Bears' Home

One morning, Mama Bear made a fresh pot of porridge for breakfast. She poured it into three bowls — a great big bowl for Papa Bear, a middle-sized bowl for herself, and a tiny bowl for Baby Bear. But the porridge was much too hot to eat right away.

"Let's take a little walk in the woods while it cools," said Papa Bear, and off the three bears went, leaving their cozy home and their steaming breakfast behind.

A Curious Visitor

Not far away, a little girl with golden curls was wandering through the very same woods. Her name was Goldilocks, and she loved to explore — peeking under leaves, following butterflies, and humming little songs to herself.

When she came upon the bears' cottage, with its door left open and the warm, sweet smell of porridge drifting out, she couldn't help but step inside. It felt different from any place she'd been before — snug, and quiet, and full of gentle little touches, like a home that had been lived in and loved.

Just Right

On the table sat the three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks tasted from the great big bowl first. "This porridge is too hot!" she said. Then she tried the middle-sized bowl. "This porridge is too cold," she said, wrinkling her nose. Finally, she tasted the tiny bowl. "Ah, this porridge is just right!" And she ate it all up, every last spoonful.

Feeling warm and a little sleepy, she looked around the room and saw three chairs by the fire. She tried the great big chair, but it was too hard. She tried the middle-sized chair, but it was too soft. Then she tried the tiny chair, and it felt just right — until, with a sudden crack!, it broke into pieces beneath her.

Still feeling drowsy, Goldilocks climbed the stairs and found three beds. The great big bed was too hard, the middle-sized bed was too soft, but the tiny bed felt just right, soft and warm like a nest. She snuggled down under the little blanket, and before she knew it, she had fallen fast asleep.

Home Again

Soon, the three bears came trudging back through the forest, hungry and ready for their breakfast. But the moment they stepped through their door, something felt different — as though someone else had been there.

"Someone has been eating my porridge!" growled Papa Bear in his great big voice. "Someone has been eating my porridge too," said Mama Bear in her middle-sized voice. And Baby Bear, peering into his tiny bowl, cried, "Someone has been eating my porridge, and they've eaten it all up!"

They found their chairs disturbed too, and when Baby Bear saw his own little chair broken to pieces, he let out a sad little cry.

Upstairs, they discovered their beds rumpled — and there, curled up fast asleep in the tiny bed, was Goldilocks herself. When Baby Bear cried out in his tiny voice, Goldilocks woke with a start, saw three bears staring down at her, and dashed out of the window and away through the forest as fast as her legs could carry her, never to return again.

The three bears were left to tidy their cozy little home — but perhaps, in the quiet that followed, they felt a small flicker of understanding: that even a stranger, wandering lost and curious, could sense just how warm and good a true home could feel.

What made the bears' cottage so special wasn't just the porridge, or the chairs, or the beds — it was the warmth of a home built with care. That's a feeling every one of us can look for, and be grateful for, wherever we live.
