The Lion and the Mouse
— Kindness returned — small friends matter
Once upon a time, in a warm and sunny forest, a great Lion lay stretched out beneath a shady tree, dozing after a long day of prowling through the tall grass. His golden mane spread out around him like a soft, sleepy cloud.
Nearby, a little Mouse was hurrying home, her tiny paws pattering over leaves and twigs. She wasn't watching where she scampered — and before she knew it, she had run right across the tip of the Lion's nose!
The Lion Wakes
The great Lion woke with a ROAR that shook the leaves from the trees. In one swift motion, he slapped his enormous paw down over the little Mouse, trapping her completely.
"Please, kind Lion, don't hurt me!" the little Mouse squeaked, her whole body trembling under his paw. "I didn't mean to wake you. If you let me go, I promise — someday I will help you."
The Lion threw back his head and let out a booming laugh. The idea of such a small, small creature ever being able to help a lion seemed like the silliest thing he had ever heard! But there was something so brave and sincere in her tiny voice that his heart softened.
"Very well, little one," the Lion said, lifting his great paw. "Run along home. I will let you go."
The little Mouse dashed off into the underbrush, her heart pounding with gratitude. She never forgot the Lion's kindness that day, and she promised herself that if she ever had the chance, she would repay him — no matter how big or small the task.
The Lion in Trouble
Some time later, the Lion was walking through his forest home when disaster struck. A hunter had set a trap, and before the Lion knew what was happening, a net of thick ropes closed tightly around him.
He roared and thrashed with all his mighty strength, but the more he struggled, the tighter the ropes pulled. Even the King of the Beasts, strong as he was, could not tear himself free. His roars of frustration echoed through the trees.
It just so happened that the little Mouse was scurrying nearby and heard the commotion. She recognized that mighty roar at once — it was her friend, the Lion who had spared her life!
She raced through the grass as fast as her tiny legs could carry her until she reached him, tangled and exhausted in the ropes.
"Hold still," she said gently. "I remember my promise. Let me help you."
A Small Friend's Big Help
With her sharp little teeth, the Mouse began to nibble at the ropes — one strand, then another, and another. It took time and patience, but she did not stop. Bit by bit, the ropes grew looser and looser.
At last, with one final gnaw, the net fell away completely, and the Lion stood up, free at last! He shook out his golden mane and looked down at the tiny creature who had saved him.
"I laughed at you once," the Lion said softly, "for saying a mouse could ever help a lion. But you have proven me wrong, little friend, and I am forever grateful."
The little Mouse smiled up at him. "Even the smallest friend can matter greatly," she said, "when kindness is given freely."
From that day on, the Lion and the Mouse remained the truest of friends, proving that size has nothing to do with the size of one's heart.
